Artist Overview
Eric Hultquist is an artist working at the intersection of sculpture, design, and architecture, creating functional artworks that exist simultaneously as lighting and as autonomous sculptural forms. His practice explores balance, tension, and movement through hand‑crafted metal structures that transform basic industrial materials into refined, poetic objects. Each piece is conceived as a spatial drawing in three dimensions — converting two-dimensional lines into three-dimensional objects — in creations where light becomes both medium and subject.

Hultquist’s lamps are not decorative accessories, but collectible works intended for architectural environments and contemporary art collections. By combining precision fabrication with intuitive composition, his work challenges the traditional boundary between fine art and functional object.

Practice & Concept
Working primarily in metal, Hultquist develops forms that emphasize equilibrium, asymmetry, and visual rhythm. Structural elements appear to float or counterbalance, creating a sense of suspended motion. Illumination is integrated as a sculptural component rather than an afterthought, allowing light to activate fabric-covered sculptural forms that redefine the surrounding environment.

Each work is fabricated as a unique piece, reinforcing its status as collectible functional sculpture. The process merges engineering logic with artistic improvisation, resulting in objects that feel both intentional and alive.

Artist Statement
“I approach light as a material rather than an accessory. Each piece begins as a sculptural investigation into line, weight, and equilibrium, where function becomes inseparable from form. The goal is to create objects that occupy space with the presence of sculpture while remaining fully usable — works that transform how light and structure are experienced together.”
